As has been ralated to me, there was a dipute between Walter Reade and
the Mayor and Council; Reade had some plans in town the Council
didn't agree with.
Reade was angry and wanted out. Word was he owed some back taxes here.
There was a group that got together to try to save the Mayfair.
I've been told that the group did file a lawsuit on a friday, but did
not secure a temporary restraining order to stop demolition.
Reade brought in the wrecking ball on Sunday, before the Court re-
opened on Monday.
Info I got from some old-timers.
My first movie was there. Fuzzy recollections - I was about 11 when
it was destroyed.
