If I remember correctly one of the decision points that led to the decision to 
remove the tress is that many of the trees were approaching the typical 
life-span for that variety of tree.  I can't quite remember where I read that, 
but I know I did somewhere.    

30-40 year old trees are not history...  I personally liked them there, and in 
a perfect world would have preferred them to remain.  But sometimes things get 
done for a reason that I may or may not love but that have merit regardless.  
This appears to be one of those cases.
