The literal block works for me, but renders with a huge amount of space 
above (PDF) making it very different from the other labeled list items. So 
I need something less blocky and more inline.

Blocks tend to be too blocky :-)

I can write the document in another fashion that doesn't require a [ at the 
beginning of a paragraph -- but I do not like limitations and I want to 
find a solution or workaround.
