I'm regarding my problem as "solved," but there is one curious quirk 
remaining. The above steps all work great for bash and C++, but don't for 
Perl. If I use the "-a latexmath" compiler flag, bash and C++ syntax 
highlighting is perfect but Perl will never show the $ no matter what I do 
- it always shows the var in italics (and with a different color) instead. 
At this point, I am just declaring 3/4 (nice equations, and syntax 
highlighting for bash and C++) a victory, but I'm curious if you have any 
thoughts on why Perl might be different.
