I'm a big fan of tools that do that sort of thing for you (I get paid by the hour, and like to play video games). I've used LLBLGen - the old version, not "Pro" which has a "dynamic SQL engine" I don't like much (I prefer Stored Procs). One I just recently checked out is ORM.Net http://www.olero.com/OrmWeb/ it's just recently been released for free. Most of these types of tools will not only create basic data-access code, but write stored procedures for you. Most do require you use SQL server however. A friend used it for some large projects back when it was commercial, and nothing but good things to say about it. If you want to do it the old fashioned way, a Java background is actually not a bad start for .Net. A lot of people coming from classic ASP have trouble thinking the OO way. Even if you don't use something like this in your project, you may think of running it once or twice just to get a good example of how you could lay out the structure yourself (or download some samples if they are available).
_____ From: Falls, Travis D (HTSC, CASD) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 2004 3:00 PM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: [AspNetAnyQuestionIsOk] database access design I have a general question. I am new to dot new from Java. In java I would write a class that does all the database stuff. It would open the connection clean it up, even fill and return the objects. With asp.net, binding, etc what is the best practice for database programming? I haven't found any good info on the web yet but I might not be searching for the correct things. I am assuming you would still want to encapsulate all your data access in one place but we all know what happens when one assumes. :-) Travis D.
