Dear Rajen da

You have raised extremely pertinent points in this
mail. By and large, I agree with your critical and
thoughtful approach to the issue of sovereignty. I
will be eagerly waiting for Mahanta das' (both CM and
MM) views on that. We must analyse the pros and cons
of sovereignty (supposing we get it in future) very
carefully in an objective and dispassionate way. We
can't afford to take any chances. I am of the opinion
that as things stand today, the cons outweigh and
outnumber the pros in a big way. The main problem with
many of ULFA supporters is their propensity to
romanticise and glorify the future outside India. I am
the last person to say that everything in India is
hunky dory. I don't approve of many policies of Delhi
towards north-east. But that is not sufficient to
warrant such a radical step which will further
intensify the problems. All of us acknowledge the fact
that there is a problem in the policy of central govt
towards Assam or other states of North-east. In such a
situation, we should try to reduce the impact of the
problem on the common people. But sovereignty is not
the panacea as many supporters try to project it to
be. Rather it will usher in an era of complete chaos
in Assam. (If anyone has doubts, they can refer to the
questions you have raised)

Coming to another related aspect, you will find 'might
is right' phenomenon more or less in all creatures and
all nations of the earth. The difference will only be
in magnitude. These can be debated but can not be
wished away. Examples are simply too many. Be it US
policy towards Iraq, Iraq's policy towards Kurds and
Shias, India's policy towards NE and Kashmir, Assam's
policy to Bodos, Karbis, Missings etc. This
undesirable trend of oneupmanship will remain till the
time human beings are around on earth. Let us all
strive towards a workable and realistic solution by
mitigating some of the ills in stead of misleading the
people by conjuring up a utopian dream, which if
translated into reality, will be nothing short of a
nightmare.

bye for now.
