Thanks all for the information.

Alpana-ba, the prepaid also need an Identity and
local Address proof to ensure that one is trackable if
the phone is used for illegal purpose. Post 9/11 most
of the countries including US has similar
restrictions. I had problems getting a pre-paid
Cingular connection here in MA even though I had a NY
License (which was expired) and copy of apartment
lease contract.

As for return of security deposit, my experience says
that the easiest way is to send a letter/email to
their corporate office (address to Customer Service
Manager) and it works wonders. You can mark a copy to
TRAI to make it more effective. I had similar issues
with Airtel which got resolved in a week.

>>that's what I did and I wrote that. Took in my
father's name. So nothing has changed.

>>The keyword is "prepaid", yes. And since the prepaid
concept is there, why in somebody's else's name? Well,
then I understand - it's not a perfect world.

>>The mistake I made was that I listened to that
honest looking young salesperson (my weakness was she
was an Assamese and was also from Santipur) who
suggested that I should take the regular (post-paid?)
connection with a thousand dollar deposit and as soon
as I return the sim card they would refund that money
to my father - he doesn't have to do anything, they
will mail a check to him.

She got a good piece of my mind on my next visit to
India though.

Internet connection in GuwahatiTo get a mobile phone
connection (per-paid) at any place in India (including
Assam), you can always manage! Take the connection
on someone's else name .. who has a Photo ID card
(PAN Card, driver's license, passport etc) and address
proof (electricity bill, bank statement photo copy)
and one or 2 small photographs !!

Thanks for the good info, Babul. And thanks to
Krishnendu for asking. About mobile phones in
Guwahati, do they allow non-residents to get a
connection now? It is great that there is no charge
for incoming calls there. Although you get hundreds of
minutes for a package deal here, they usually charge
even more for incoming calls. I think India is very
advanced in this field.

But I had to get my cell phone connected in my
father's name. Reliant won't even give me a
connection, it was one of those two - Air...
something. One is doing very well, I hear, so it would
be the other. They gave my folks back home a lot of
trouble - instead of giving them the deposit back
(yes, it was one thousand rupees only, but still they
never saw that money again but was relieved that their
"head office" in Fancy Bazar realized that it was a
closed account and stopped any charges into the
closed/non-existing account), they kept sending them
the bills for months even after the phone was
disconnected and the sim card was surrendered. It was
just so ridiculous! that a lawyer friend of ours even
asked if we needed any help so they won't do it to
others. Reliant won't even add a new phone even if
you have an account with them - during that time -
about a year or so ago. And if you use your phone
connection from the US, the good connection is there
but would cost you an arm and a leg. Of course, one
good thing in India (about computers and getting a
connection) is that the technician would make house
calls - though within the warranty period only. And I
hear there is no license/copyright restriction for
most of the application softwares - even when one uses
it for profit. Anyway, I feel better now that I said
it all. Thanks again. - baideu
