This story of Cotton College was repeated during Assam agitation also. Two
very academically brilliant ladies asked the boys to follow what they preached.
Then the politician mother of one of the said two girl students on another
occasion almost undid the trouser buttons of an upstart, who had the temerity
to ask a similar question about her Sari, and asked him to wear dhoti:-).

Handing out of capital punishment with impunity and then apologising and/or
admitting mistake and/or trying to brand hapless victims as spies etc. have
become the order of the day in many parts of the world, Assam and Manipur being
no exception. We have almost become desensitised about such things. As you have
noted, many others have told me that they wonder whether mankind is becoming
more civilised or base.

One more thing. I have sometime ago read a book by Ishiah Berlin (The Crooked
Timber of Humanity ) where he traces the philosophical roots of nationalism
among may other things. He shows that despite its creative, romantic,
adventurous and many other positive values, nationalism has an innate
irrational streak due to its romantic roots. I do not know whether I have
surmised wrongly, but I have gathered as much from the said book. But I tend to
believe that Fatwas issued by the national/religious outfits are sometimes the
results of such irrationality magnified by the evil elements inside such
organisations with ulterior or otherwise kinky motives. ( Do I sound
pseudo-philosophical? I take the risk with you.:-) )

    Uttam,

Many moons ago, while in Cotton and during the 'ragging' season, one of
friends (who has become a well-known politician now), was with a group ragging
a young lady (freshman), and asked her why she wasn't wearing mekhela-chaador
(instead of pants). She replied that she would as soon as the men started
wearing dhuti-panjabi.
Well she is doing quite well in the good ole USA, after a fanstastic
educational achievement. The famous politician has, from what I hear, become a
multi-millionaire, and he never wasted anytime readings books.

As for women required to keep up the standards, men are real good at
enforcing the rules, but don't expect them to follow them too :)

But what do you make of this? What is this secret agent (007?) of meethapati?

The outfit also claimed the responsibility for killing one non-local Prasad
(35), who worked as an agent of meethapati, zarda and khaini at Ningthoukhong
in Manipur's Bishnupur district. He was awarded capital punishment on Monday at
around 6.30 pm for failing to heed to the repeated warnings of the outfit.

  In this day and age?

I also wonder in case of all 'natonal' 'religious' or such other 'upheavals'
why the women-folk are always required to adhere to the 'national' 'religious'
dress code while the men-folk can do with or without whatever they like. I have
failed to understand the logic. It must be inherent in the 'feeling' itself
that leads to such upsurges.( Iran, Assam or Manipur for example)

Hehehe Uttaam! I too saw the photograph.

These self-righteous, sons-of-soil, are hell-bent in getting rid of these
'dangerous desuali' elements and their dirty habits (imported). But, wearing
jeans is fine (see photo). After all, jeans, hamburgers, and moving ones hips
to a western number are all a part of Manipuri culture, isn't it?

I say, good for them and hobo diok!

The news and a photograph showing destruction of 'imported' meethapatti made
my friend CA Devajit Sharma remark: 'Only drugs will be allowed in Manipur
henceforth'.

RPF warns against import of meethapati
>From Sobhapati Samom
 IMPHAL,Oct 25 – Manipur-based outfit Revolutionary People's Front (RPF) has
warned the Indian Airlines and other transport agencies against helping in
bringing the banned meethapati (betel leaf) into the State in future.

The import and sale of meethapati has been banned in Manipur since October 15
last. The outfit has imposed a blanket ban on import and sale of zarda, khaini
and talab in Manipur since the last four years. The outfit said those whosoever
involved in import and sale of the meethapati, violating the ban order, would
be "considered for punishment".

In a statement, assistant secretary, communication and publicity of the outfit,
Lily Leima said that Prasad had been working as an agent of zarda, khaini and
meethapati in the State for the last 15 years.

In spite of the ban imposed on zarda and khaini by the outfit long ago and the
subsequent ban on meethapati since October 15 this year, Prasad continued to
supply these harmful substances with complete disregard to the warnings given
to him, the statement said.
