>Those are the questions that affect Assam, as it does India and all it controls.
Hehehe! And once those controls are cast away, Assam's story will be like the rise of the Phoenix, and we can all hold hands and sing kum ba yah. :). But seriously, There are severe structural problems with the 2 airports in Mumbai & Delhi. Cell connections are probably very bad in Assam, but pretty good elsewhere (from my experience) and the Mumbai & Delhi airports (Internationals) are probably the worst anywere. As one approaches Mumbai (thank your stars if its at night), you get to view the ghastly sprawl of the 85000 odd hutments of the Mumbai slum. >From what I have heard, everyone from the Mumbai mafia (Haaji Maastans of today), to those pretending to be social workers (working for the Chopad Paati - the slums), to Govt. officials, ministers have a finger in the pie. No one is interested in or can possibly get a half-way decent airport there. The worst part is that one is forced to deal with the usually callous & non-challant attitude of airport personnel (Govt. servants). The airline people are usually pretty efficient under the citcumstances) The roofs of both Mumbai and Delhi Airports have collapsed several times, but life continues. Nowadays, I try to avoid Mumbai and Delhi like the plague. Delhi airport is so damn antiquated, that it still does not have the Instrument Landing System in place. So avoid Delhi, specially in winter due to the fog. Some folks in Delhi tell me it, its touch & go, each time you land of take off - hats off to the deft handling by the pilots. My advice, Kolkatta /Chennai/Hyderabad/Trivandrum are far superior options to fly inti India. Also, Guwahati's LGB Airport maybe smaller, but much better shape than either Delhi or Mumbai. My experience with cell phone connection at Guwahati was just terrible. We wanted a prepaid (Aircell) for a month or so. The sales girl (the demure, amar paarar swali) conned us into getting the postpaid. That was a cell phone connection from hell. I think we may hae been able to use it probably a couple of times - the damn thing would hardly ever work. We returned the chip when we left. The real nightmare started only afterwards. They promptly ate up the deposit of several thousands RS. Kept sending enormous bills (of a non existent connection) to the relative in whose name we took the phone. It took many months and a second trip to Guwahati to get the bills to stop. I have seen many people have have 2 or 3 cells. The reason is that some work well for the city, while others for the state and countrywide. But I must say, cell connections in other cities are really good (specially the metros). Anyway, thats my 2 cents . Here is link, which some of you may be interested in. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/GC16Df02.html --Ram
