Assamese dictionary app makes debut GUWAHATI: Durlov Gogoi, an Assamese lexicographer-cum-software expert, has developed an Assamese and English bilingual dictionary app that can run offline. The app, named Aadarxa Bilingual Dictionary, was released a couple of days ago at the ongoing North East Book Fair. It already has more than 1,20,000 words as well as pictures and took over a year to be developed. The app, available on Android and iOS platforms, was developed by Gogoi with technical help from Valentina Padydora of Romania. "I downloaded and installed around 10 similar apps which were developed in various parts of the country and for various languages. But I was not completely satisfied with any of them. So I approached Valentina for the hard bits," said Gogoi. Even though the app can work offline, Gogoi said a user must be online to be able to view the pictures. "The images take up a large amount of space, hence a user has to be online to view them," Gogoi said. "There are facilities for searching words by categories. For instance, one can key in names of animals and birds, special days and even scientific terms to find a particular word," he added. Another helpful feature that has been added to the 13.14 MB app is an Assamese keypad. For an Assamese user who wishes to search Assamese words, a keypad in the language is a godsend. The app is not free, however. A user has to shell out Rs 100 for a first-time installation. "If a user formats his or her device, they can re-install the app free of cost," Gogoi said. Updates, too, will be made free. The total production cost of the app was a little over Rs 2,50,000, said Gogoi who had developed a software called 'Xahaj Xandhan Axomiya Abhidhan' (easy-search Assamese dictionary) four years ago. The software made it possible for students and language facilitators to pursue their activities in Assamese. It also helped users with grammar, usage, syntax and pronunciation.
