This is quite a diversion from the purpose of this thread but things ought to be talked about as and when they are felt is my view of expressing feelings. I too have faced certain moments when Assamese people around me feel it prestigiuos to talk in Assamese. Look at the Urban Scenerio in Assam. In the upper-middle class and upper class Assamese society there has been widespread use of English language. Even in other parts of India, it is prevalent but not at the expense of the local vernacular. We should learn to use our language wherever possible and should not feel hesitant to use it anywhere inside Assam. There are some instances which I wanted to quote here. I did not study in a vernacular medium school, but had Assamese as a language till my HSLC. During my days in school I noticed that most of us students could read English fluently. But when we were to read Assamese, people had to break their teeth. Love for one's language has to be infused within us right from our childhood. I still feel English medium schools are a detriment to the infusion of such feelings. Any study will show that people with an English medium background has a greater chance of being successful in career compared to one having an Assamese medium background, thought this is not a generalised statement. Thus, people with effluent status raise their children in English medium schools which negatively impacts one's effinity towards one's language. I feel language is a great factor in generating Patriotic feelings. Thus one's love and responsibility towards Assam is also influenced by his love towards Assamese language. People learn from mistakes. When I became quite fluent in speaking hindi, I had once talked to the Marwari grocer in hindi, to which he replied in Assamese and I was ashamed and never did the mistake again. I have seen people trying to talk in broken bengali to the Bangladeshi rickshawalla. Agreed, you have to make quick decisions to run from the scorching sun. But you are making his life easier. Any discussion relating to throwing out the Bangladeshis from Assam is futile in all senses. We should protest it nonetheless. But we should be aware of the implications due to the large rate in their increasing population which may at one point of time control Assamese polity and bureaucracy. Our leaders, of all the alternatives, do not have the minimal commitment regarding this issue. We have to live with this problem indefinitely. There is no escape route from it. Instead we can make our studying population learn to love their language. They should also be infused with a sense of responsibility towards one's society. This may at one point stop Brain Drainage of which, sadly, I and most of us are casualities. Its not that I, and many of us, are running from social responsibilities. If any force creates ample avenues in Assam for people like us, we would gladly accept them and contribute towards Assam's overall development. And I feel there are many Assamese who can embark on such ventures but are hesitating. =============================================== Manoj Agarwal Date: Sun Oct 29, 2006 7:40 am Subject: Re: [asom] Nehru's letter Big thumbs up! Some of the atrocious hindi spoken by assamese people that I hear on a regular basis are ... " Oi riksa, faasi bajar jayenga neki ?" or "O dokani bhai, aluguti kenekoi deta hai ? " ...." Aao imaan dam? olopo kom nokorega neki ? "...etc. I think we are killing two languages here, both assamese and hindi. Regarding your other problem, on your next trip home , try hanging out at a few strategic locations like the police point near the Handique girl's college, in front of Cotton college or bellow the Krishna chura trees at the Jalukbari university campus. You should be able to find your soulmate without much trouble . While at it, you might care to read another classic by Prof. Dutta .. " Miss Gauhati" ; or the all time classic "Brikodar Baruar Biya" by Lila Gogoi. All the best to you , Brother ! Thank u Amlan. ur words just reflected my thoughts too. i m not at home in English, but i m not ashamed for it as it is not our mother tongue. But the frustruation i have in me is because of the fact that i couldnot learn Asomiya fully till date. many times, i even make spelling errors... so let us begin from ourselves. we all should love our "Jaati, kristi and Bhasa" ,,,,and make atleast ourselves a practitioner of all "Asomiya" first. i personally think Asomiya jaati as a culturally very rich and mentally tough enough to resist its existance. the current debate proved how much we love our "Jaati" and "Bhasa", "Kristi". so thank u very much again for ur good thoughts. Moreover, i have already prayed to "Bhogoban" for ur Asomiya Koina. hope u'll very soon meet ur gal. regards-- Bidyut B. Saikia, CICO, CIC-Chaayaduar, Sonitpur, Asom.
