Pretending not to know one's language when in a comparitively enlightened company seems to be the way to do it.
The Boro in Udalguri town strives to be at home in Assamese, for the Assamese in Delhi it is Hinglish. Only the Tamilians seem to be different with a sandalwood pasted forehead,rasam-sambar, and their language whether in Zunheboto or Napa Valley. But for them Hindi would have blown us over many times now. My gratitude to them. BTW how about making the learning of an Indian language (non-Hindi) compulsory for the Hindies? Just as Hindi is being pushed through our throats they also should be made to savour the taste of another language, otherwise where is the fun of integration. The army of Hindi(Rajbhasha) officers in Govt. offices whose only job is to write down a Hindi word each day with its English translation on the departmental notice board is a joke. The N F Rly HQ has a General Manager(Rajbhasha) who heads a huge deptt whose job is not related to Trains but to blow the fragrance of Hindi to withered Hindi-deprived North Easterners. This is a waste. Thanks to Rajni for highlighting the issue and yes her children must learn Boro whether in Delhi or Istanbul. see - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/assamonline/message/2722 Yahoo!
