First of all I am not concerned abt other
societies...neither am I interested in mentioning
anything unpleasant abt Assam to Non Assamese. But
its time we Assamese accept what is going on in Assam
& what is wrong with our society then only we will
know how to correct it.The AAMI Akhomiya NOHOU
DUKHIYA ATTITUDE DOSENT HELP only HANDICAPS.

What kind of problems a common person who stays in
Assam faces while dealing with govt officials will
make you go mad if yu are a true Assamese patriot.I
have experience of that..... I have dealt with a lot
of govt departments in my 5 years here.Although I am
myself a govt employee with more authority than a lot
of people yet no official work moves without a
bribe...just think what a common illiterate man must
be facing.(Yes these are prevalent all over India...so
what ...two wrongs do not make a right ....if a non
assamese says these things you can say that its also
there in your society but does that make us better
???).

Let me give u one example.... Few days back ,something
went wrong with the power connection in my auntie's
place.She is 80 years old & stays alone..For three
days I went to the complaint office three times a
day....everytime they would promise to send
somebody...ultimately I lost my cool bcoz they were
not responding to an old lady's plea.Still they did
not come. She was runing out of water.I had to leave
for Cal in the meantime. So for 7 days nobody came.
Ultimately my auntie who cannot see properly or walk
properly had to bribe them Rs 1000 .Then only they
attended to her complaint. These things are pretty
common.

Do you know that Land Grabbing by the mafia(
surrendered freedom fighters(?) supported by local
politicians & policemen is at all time high in
Assam....My friend from Jakhalabandha lost his land.
Have yu heard about goonda Tax ?

Do you know that all the govt. contracts are cornered
by this mafia ?( I know bcoz I am dealing with them)
DO you know that you cant walk by with your
wife/daughter/sister without being tormented by road
side Romoes in every street corner ? I have faced
that.Cant we see how that terorists ae screwing up our
land by teaming up with ISI. Axomiya will become Miya
after sometime.

These are the some of the things ailing Assamese
Society & if you stay now in Assam you will experience
them & the better it is for us if we rectify them
instead of burying our heads in the sand & sing Bihu
songs & eat Pitha. Yes there are a lot of good things
which have always been there but these are being
rapidly overshadowed by the bad things and fortunately
or unfortunately the cream of our people outside cant
experience them and therefore do not believe them.
So the only way is to share these things and try to
fight them which some of us trying to do thro' RTI
etc.But first we have to accept what is wrong & that
takes courage.

& yes about discouraging remarks by neighbours about
career choices its deliberate.............bcoz we
Assamese refuse to learn.....& whoever has done well
in alternative careers have done so by shunning the
Kekuras.

Next mail I will elaborate with actual real life
Examples.

Till then.

PS:
Niloy,(I think yu are from RIT Jamshedpur maybe of 95 Batch), You do
not know me thats why you have certain doubts abt my Indian & Assamese
credentials.Any guy from 92 batch will tell yu abt me & how much we
had done for the NE in RIT & what our patriotism was & still is.

We do it a lot and we overdo it a lot... self pity
and self criticism.

Friends, the subject of the email did strike a blow
at some corner of my heart. Had this been written by
a person who is from some other part of the world or
had this been uttered by a friend in real presence I
would have taken offence and pointed the mirror at
this guy. Same goes with the sentiments of being an
Indian. I am an Indian, an Assamese and I am proud
to be one.

Just some questions that I was reflecting on:
Are the traits mentioned below found only amongst
the assamese people? I have witnessed people from
other regions in the country and world to exhibit
the same.
Are these traits so bad that we discount the good
that most of us have as a community and become angry
about our own community?
Have we as a person done enough to talk about the
career and work that we do to the fellow who is
under a different impression?

We all would agree that our parents, brothers and
sisters know what we do. Why is this different for
some other person? Can we help them or should we
shun them for their not being able to uderstand the
same?

We are doing good but we need to be doing good at
all levels. Am sure that with time people will be
more informed about career choices that other people
make.

I do understand the sentiments of the previous
writers but I surely did not like the subject of the
email which targets the entire community (us).

Please do forgive me if I have hurt anyone's
feelings by penning my thoughts. Criticism to the
above is welcome.

Regards,
Niloy Gogoi

Subject: [asom] Petty Assamese mentality

Some more statements from our enlightened Assamese
which gets me mad:

Oh so you want to study fashion designing but why do
you want to be a tailor ?

Oh so you want to do mass communication but why do
you want to be a cameraman ?

Oh so you stood 2nd in the exams ? what a pity ,we
thought you would be first.( Dosent matter if the
guy/lady's own children are bad in studies) Oh so
you want to study hotel manangement but why do you
want to be a cook ?

So just chill coz our NE guys are doing good
everywhere: in software, in BPO, in aviation ,in
hotel mamagement etc etc. No need to explain to
dumbos.Everyjob is important but we Assamese do not
understand the value of work & think that some work
are below our dignity.

Very true Saumar,

It's indeed a gargantuan task to explain the
difference to such people. I have committed the
Himalayan blunder quite a couple of times. The
moment you end up describing about the
multi-national company (MNC) you are working for,
pat comes the response.... Ohhh!!... I get it. A
BPO!! (like hell he/she knows..may not even know the
full form, leave alone the what it stands for! You
wince, but valiantly keep a straight face! He/she
continues nonetheless. ..) It is really sad that you
people in MNCs have to talk to clients all through
the night!?...You try once, you repeat twice,
thrice, trying to get it straight again, ultimately
you sagely bob your head and echo...yes,
sometimes..especial ly when I can't get any sleep!

"When you can't beat them, join them"... is what
most of us end up doing.

PS: Infosys is a helluva company guys. Great work.
Show them your skills. Let them taste the power of
Assamese talent. Congratulations once more. May your
tribe increase.
