And even that approach has its limitations as most mail programs thread messages based on other things than the subject. So attempts to respond with modified subject line spawn another thread. Ideally we'd expect people to go through the web interface to respond, but one may question the value given how quick discussions go with those who participate. On another list we have someone who frequently respond after a few hours on the original post apparently w/o having looked at the other reactions to the post. It's confusing to most and insulting to some. I feel like an old fart thinking this is one of the symptoms of the new style of working (which is "if it seems to work, don't bother to look whether it's the right way to do it"). Rob PS I found gmail does a wonderful job handling mailing lists effectively (threading combined with the search, plus the "embarrasment pop-up" feature) to let you keep up with the traffic. I would not want to try handle that volume with a simplistic mail agent. This weekend I could find the link to "inclusive reckoning" almost instantly during a birthday party ;-)
