Well, this 'hardcore COBOL/mainframe programmer' uses them quite a lot, and has 
been using them for over 30 years.  I also have mainframe programmer co-workers 
of a much younger generation who not only know and use RE's but even stranger 
languages like Ruby and Python.

Not everyone in this business fits into that particular rigid mold.  Some of us 
are quite flexible.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. We have our own implementation of 
a library that does regular expressions and I use it a lot. I think regular 
expressions are a very valuable and versatile tool... But your reaction is not 
uncommon: just about every 'hardcore COBOL/mainframe programmer' reacts the 
same way when they see their first regular expression.
