As for LAY, I'm not a particular fan of using an instruction named after one particular function (load address) to be used for a less obvious function (loading an "immediate" value).
LA is commonly used to increment the content of a register by 1, 2, or 4, which s handy when the register has a value used for indexing. --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
