Although I didn't know John until he was with IBM, I was grateful for all the work he did to make sure all aspects of HLASM and the linkage editor were accessible to anyone who attended his SHARE sessions. I have a quite complete collection of all his bound "lecture notes (tomes)" that accompanied his presentations. Give his family my thanks for sharing him with us these many years.
I still have subroutines from his SLAC days for converting floating point to external decimal from long before there were any hardware instructions to make the task easier. I am deeply saddened to report that John passed away this morning (Tuesday, 20 February 2018) following a protracted battle with cancer. His wife, Tineke, reports: "He died in his sleep, and is now at peace and pain free. John will be cremated; in the near future there will be a memorial service at our church in Palo Alto." I will convey any further information on the memorial to this listing.
