Interesting thought, but not fully applicable, as most of the perl overhead 
is in loading and compiling to byte-code at startup.  In the ASSP case, 
with a seriously long running daemon that consideration does not really 
apply, and one must compare the efficiency of the running code

tends to suggest that rewriting would not be good use of anyone's time -- I 
note that the lines of code required are noticably less for perl, the 
memory footprint simmilar...  Also they say nice things about perl 
programmers :-)
