Interesting thought, but not fully applicable, as most of the perl overhead is in loading and compiling to byte-code at startup. In the ASSP case, with a seriously long running daemon that consideration does not really apply, and one must compare the efficiency of the running code <http://page.mi.fu-berlin.de/prechelt/Biblio/jccpprt_computer2000.pdf> tends to suggest that rewriting would not be good use of anyone's time -- I note that the lines of code required are noticably less for perl, the memory footprint simmilar...
