A legal server will not (or less) get a 'damping' by ASSP. The idea behind damping, is to steal the spammers time. A single system does not make sense, but some thousend do. - The time, a spammer has to send spam, is limmited - and if we steal him a part of this time, he can send less spam. - If he realize, that your MX is answering slow - you'll get a "spammers penalty" and he will make less connection to your MX. Or he will open too much connection at the same time, so he will be catched by our frequency feature and will fastly get extreme black - I can confirm, that you'll get much less spammers connections after damping is switched on - it takes less than a week for the spammers to realize, that they are not welcome by your ASSP and that they lose time. stolen time by damping: ................... 625 days 8 hours 14 mins This is the statistic of a single system in a time of two months. Just estimate, what is happen to the spammers if some thousend other systems are doing the same. Another way to fool the spammers: There is a registered domain - only for spammers, which is not used by any legal person or organization. The web page contains some hidden email addresses for the robots - nothing else. The MX records of that domain points to an ASSP-cluster with shared databases and some backup MX (with assp and less normal workload) of other domains to collect the spammers IP's. While daming is done by ASSP, there is enough time to ... - I'll stop here. IMHO - ASSP is great to block spam - but I think we should fight against the spammers as much as we can in a legal way. It's a great tool for letting other sysadmins know somethings wrong with their system (ie, they would see their queues backing-up, and hopefully investigate why..) But surely a spammer would "fire and forget"... Surely he wouldn't care if his spam took 10 seconds, 2 minutes, 1 hour, or even never arrives.. Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining about damping. I just see it fits into the "misconfigured mta" category more than the "spammer" category.. Or have I missed something?
