This was while using the ASSP gui right? I don't use it except for a quick
glance after restarting.
I do all my log searching/analysis using Textpad running on windows. Great
app. Allows fast searching of many files for a single IP or email address
or whatever. I keep all my log history in folders by year and month if I
want to look up trends. I do all my searching from my desktop accessing the
logs on the server accross the network. I can have dozens of logs open and
multiple searches and it doesn't affect my server. Another nice feature in
the "find in files" search is it can return the actual line for each hit, or
a number of hits in each file for a more compact search result. Double
clicking on a search result will open that log file directly to that line.
Very cool.

One thing I use it for is to find which invalid recipients are sent to the
most, then I convert them to spam addresses so I can capture the email as
spam. Depending on what I am receiving there, I will then decide to convert
to a spam trap address or keep it as a spam address only.

Also, if you like to watch the log roll by in realtime, it has an auto
update feature you can turn on.
