Debian already has a maintainer for the ASSP package - Jose Parrella
I spoke to him a while ago about getting involved as - in his admission - 
he's been busy on other things.

He had almost Debian quality packages for ASSP 1.2.1 in October 2006.  How much 
work was required to get that far I do not know but I guess with 1.2.1 being so 
old now there is probably a lot to do to get back up to date.

I have my own ideas on setup and layout that are fairly consistent with 
Debian's - if
you want to make it a joint effort I am game.
