An additional cpu might help your situation as assp is a single thread. Enough memory, a newish cpu and a good disk controller (battery+cache) might help. 10-20 minutes rebuild time is not that unusual. However, another solution would be to use another host for the database rebuilding than the one handling the messages. The spam/notspam/errors folders can be rsynced or shared over the network. Then the newly created database files can be copied back to the message handling servers after they've been rebuilt.
