ASSP has been around for many years and is not "re-inventing the wheel". You have not been around ASSP for very long, as stated in your first email to the list on 04/21/2007, but that is no excuse for not doing your homework and making bogus claims like the above. > Would it be worthwhile to explore replacing that engine with DSPAM? Sure, if it offers a significantly better process for handling Bayesian filtering. I think most everything is "worthwhile to explore". I tend to be the "try it once before you say you don't like it" kind of person, for most things. :o) > DSPAM is a very advanced bayesian filter that has (I believe) many more > features and is potentially a lot smarter than the bayesian filter in > ASSP. Personally I think DSpam looks very promising. Definately deserves watching. I do not believe we need to consider adding it to ASSP at this time. The Bayesian filter in ASSP works very well for the folks that put time into training it, however I believe Bayesian in general is somewhat depricated in value compared to contact based tests and other content based tests we use in ASSP. Also there's this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DSPAM "at the spam filter test performed at TREC 2005[2] the best-performing DSPAM configuration had misclassification rates significantly worse than the leading filters in the test and far below stated levels of accuracy." http://trec.nist.gov/pubs/trec14/papers/SPAM.OVERVIEW.pdf (2005 version) http://trec.nist.gov/pubs/trec15/papers/SPAM06.OVERVIEW.pdf (2006 version) Doug Traylor ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
