I found this http://www.linuxmanpages.com/man1/vacation.1.php (vacation) 
to be the most trouble free. As in the least evil, since out of office 
messages are kind of evil. It uses a little database where it keeps 
record of who did get an auto reply and such, so it won't auto reply for 
a set amount of time to that recipient.
