I have ran into the pix 501 doing some odd stuff as well, there is a setting we had to change to get it to stop fiddling with email packets. I can not remember what it was. I have some notes on another machine I will try to post. Not sure it will help, but I found it very common that the pix routers mess with email in a bad way.
