I think the big problem is that this cuts both ways. Did the customer do something wrong? Did the merchant do something wrong? We'll never know the whole/inside story. But now the dirty laundry is out in the open, neither party is shown in the most flattering light, and all over a couple hundred bucks (which I can understand is a lot of cash, but there are better ways of handling the situation).
