I know I''m going wind up with a carrier. I just hope I can find one that will be around for a while.

Well, when a carrier goes out of business their numbers are returned to the pool. You MIGHT be able to get them if you talk nicely to the top dog (XO, Level3, etc), but probably not. I don't know exactly what you want for an answer..... if you don't want to park at a carrier where else will you park?

I have a number that was ported to Vonage about 7 months
    ago. Well the
CFO of my company did anyway. With the present Vonage situation he
    would
like to port that number away from Vonage. Is there a place,
    other than
a carrier, to park a number ? He has had this number for may
    years and
would like to hold on to it.

I know I could port it to any number of carriers but don't want to
    move
it to someone I don't know will be in business tomorrow. BTW, what
happens to the numbers a carrier has when they vanish ? I would
    imagine
it's a pain recovering those number from a customer point of view.
