-1 indicates error and perror() should be called (or something that will be more meaningful). That is something that potentially should be added to iaxmodem in the near future. Are you running anything that will read /dev/ttyIAX like hylafax? If there is nothing that can read the device the buffer for that device will become full and you will see these errors. You may need to install hylafax now and get that running.
