I don't see a problem with monetary reward for hard work. If it wasn't for Mark, the Digium Team, and the community of developers you wouldn't have what you have. I am thankful for open source projects and support in anyway I can.. Money or otherwise. So say I'm brainwashed or employed either way.. I support and stand behind Digium 100%
