The key to MOS is the middle letter: "O"pinion is (or was) they key to
MOS.

How MOS was calculated was that a group of folks from different
demograhics (women/men, old/young) are asked to listen to several audio
samples and record their opinion--on a scale of 0 to 5--of the quality.
Rather than a simple 0-5 scale overall, there are several categories. I
can't recall exactly, but the scales are somthing like clarity, volume,
noise, etc.

All the results are tabulated and averaged out.

Products exist to calculate the MOS, but that sounds kinda like an
electronic art critic. Whether a computer can deliver an "opinion" begs
some debate.
