Philip et.al:

I'm thinking it is possible to do fax detection over SIP trunks as I currently do this with SIP connection to an SPA-3000.

What is required is that the SIP trunk be configured to hand over the call immediately. That is, it goes from 100 -> 180 -> 200 right away. This way, you can use NVFaxDetect to listen to the audo channel of the 'Rings' and then the pickup sounds of the callee.

Note: If you are receiving calls this way, you may looks Caller ID this way (unless of course somebody adds software detection/dsp-processing of Caller ID signals to NVFaxDetect).

yes fax detection works great in asterisk but keep in mind the incomming lines have to support fax tones etc.. ie you cannont have a sip trunk forward by a terminator and have hopes of getting a fax on it.. if you have a pri or regular
pstn lines no worriies :)

its good to add ringing(3) in your incomming dial rule so that it has enought
time to decern the fax tone, other than that should work fine.

Note * big not ... spandsp is a little broken in 1.2(as in dosnt compile nicly like in 1.0.9) (im currently fixing mine) so check the documents on the voip
wiki for the lines in the c code to change.
