Interestingly enough, I have some close friends that build telecom
equipment for both companies... really cool stuff.

Some of their products take a 42U rack of telecom equipment and
consolidate it down to 4U size (or less).

I am told the technology integration that's happened at the towers over
the years (not just their products, but all) is huge. Once large rooms
that sat at the bases of some of these major towers were full of
equipment. Racks and racks... Now, apparently a couple of racks.

Unfortunately, I'd assume that some of the old equipment just isn't
worth consolidating until there is a dollar reason for it.

Which, is why 90% of my rural friends, are FUBAR when it comes to
telecom/internet.

No DSL, No Cable, crap SAT, bad wireless coverage, etc... I am amazed
that much of southern Ontario is still in the dark, yet small places up
in bay like Moose Factory have better internet options (not harping on
Moose Factory, I love that place and they absolutely should have it).

Now if only the Hydro companies could give it a shot.

I can hear it now... I'm sorry, our electricity doesn't reach your
place... but we can offer you dialup at $14.95/month. ARGH!

Interesting, well, I just checked out the service area's of both rogers
portable, and sympatico unplugged, it almost seems like the service
area's are a carbon copy of each others. That and my area is excluded.

It was my impression from the rogers website that Portable
Internet requires cable internet to be
        available at your 'remote' locations...

Being on the outskirts of a serviced area sucks... middle of BF
idaho is even worse.

Portable internet doesn't require cable service anywhere

If you are within the coverage area and you have the CPE radio,
then you've got 3mb or 1.5mb service

Apparently this service will cover the same footprint as cellular
service does now when it is fully deployed

The only thing about 'portable' is that they only have desk
mounted CPE currently, so it should be called 'luggable' internet
