Last time I was in Italy, it ended up costing me $1300 in Cell phone

I'm off to France. Any ideas or suggestion on how to use Trixbox or DIDs
to bring that cost down?
You don't say where the $1300 was spent - on calls between Toronto and
Italy, or just local calls inside EU?
For the former, for calls between you and back here, it seems obvious to
me, but I'm probaly overlooking something equally obvious - you take an
IP phone (either a hardphone, or a softphone on your notebook), that is
programmed to login to your fully-connected Asterisk box back here.
Presto, local calls from Toronto can be made from your phone where you
are, and vice versa.
I don't have a good answer for calls between you and others "over
there", but I assume there are Asterisk Hosted Service companies in
Europe that you can go on a monthly basis (for one month).
OTOH, If you want to use your cell over there, my advice is to buy a SIM
card (this assumes your cell is with Rogers) at the airport in France,
where I presume that they have the same deal as in the UK, you buy a
"starter" SIM card and recharge it periodically, just a pay-as-you-go
contract with no need to buy a phone and no contract).
If you have a CDMA phone, consider buying a cheap GSM "world phone" and
follow this plan, or alternately, rent one over there.
Oh, and have a great trip.
