If you unpack what is meant exactly by "pc", "user", "server" and "POTS
lines" things start to get a little messy ... :-)

Does the patent prohibit routing packets from a pc to a server that is
connected to POTS lines ? A patent on a codec or some specific device I
can understand, but a patent on the general concept of a communications
channel across networks?

But EBay/Skype/Yahoo Google do have money and must violate many of the
permitted ideas of telecommunications. Errm I meant patents not ideas.
Perhaps the reason for the lack of lawsuits so far is that if the
patents were rigorously enforced it would accelerate the adoption of
pure end-to-end VoIP which is what the owners of POTS do not want to happen.
