Didn't someone post to this list the patent was over a flashing LED when
the user had voice mail waiting? (something ebay/skype/yahoo don't do)...

Rumour going round about a patent on least cost routing that google
didn't want to cough up for (and I don't blame them, seems like a
trivial idea to me, but would cost to go through court etc) which is why
they aren't offering a proper VoIP to Phone service.
