Hi Duane,
It is true that transcoding is an issue for this little devices.
Here's the transcoding output from my asterisk running on a Linksys
NSLU2 (ARM 266Mhz/32M):
CLI> show translation
Translation times between formats (in milliseconds) for one
second of data
Source Format (Rows) Destination Format (Columns)
g723 gsm ulaw alaw g726aal2 adpcm slin lpc10 g729 speex ilbc g726 g722
g723 - - - - - - - - - - - - -
gsm - - 22 22 52 19 21 - - 421 - 52 -
ulaw - 32 - 1 32 46 1 - - 401 - 32 -
alaw - 32 1 - 32 46 1 - - 401 - 32 -
g726aal2 - 47 17 17 - 14 16 - - 416 - 1 -
adpcm - 33 3 3 33 - 2 - - 402 - 33 -
slin - 31 1 1 31 45 - - - 400 - 31 -
lpc10 - - - - - - - - - - - - -
g729 - - - - - - - - - - - - -
speex - 60 30 30 60 74 29 - - - - 60 -
ilbc - - - - - - - - - - - - -
g726 - 48 18 18 1 15 17 - - 417 - - -
g722 - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I enabled speex just to see how it will perform. According to the
output is should be able to handle a call (didn't tested tough). I
tested gsm/g711 transcoding and it is working fine.
Asterisk 1.4 is able to handle properly g729 in pass through mode,
however, voicemail for a call with g729 _only_ will not work.
Voicemail is working quite nice (even the mailing option).
And here's the amount of memory available on the device:
$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 30520 27180 3340 0 2296 13800
-/+ buffers/cache: 11084 19436
Swap: 0 0 0
There are ppl using the gmail plugin with these little devices.
I'm running asterisk on this little device (behind a NAT) for almost
two years without a problem.
Regards,
Ovidiu Sas
