I got a vodaphone SIM and used 3G in .ro and .it without any problems whatsoever. Of course you won't be downloading tons, but if you want IM and email without attachments, it should be *plenty*. Hell, I can give you my vodaphone .ro SIM if you like, I *know* there is still some money left on it.
