Once you get root access it's a fully functional copy of linux in your
pocket, anything you can normally do can be done, however it lends
itself to mostly view only type functionality. That is it's very tedious
to try and type a lot of information with it, but you can use SSH to
connect to servers, you can view web pages (obviously), and K-9 mail
works great as an imap client etc etc etc. There is at least one
functional jabber client as well.

Apart from work related stuff I use it for geocaching, I also record
location data to GPX files to upload to openstreetmap.org.

I also use a wifi tether app to connect my laptop to the net without a
tether plan etc.

Most, if not all of the above stuff can be done on most "smart" phones,
only Apple has the hide to make claims about it being the only platform
with "apps that can do that".
