Michael, Oh no... There is a really long, documented problem with the natsemi dp83815 ethernet chip that Soekris used to use. They have since moved to the dp83816 which, along with a new driver, was supposed to fix these problems. The problem was with cable attenuation. I'm no EE, but the point is the net4801 was very finicky about the length of ethernet cables. Have you tried different lengths? 10ft? 100ft? See what happens.
