Joseph, Both the ASTKD and ASTURW (key disk and unionfs) partitions are checked by fsck at boot time. As long as there are no serious problems, no manual intervention is required. If there are serious disk problems you may need to do manual intervention, but this is not different than what you would see with other distributions and storage systems. In most cases, there are no problems although clean shutdowns are preferred.
