Wow! Those AudioCode media gateways look impressive. I think even the lowest end one I see on the AudioCode website is overkill for the one line I need for a fax line.

I've now ruled out the Cisco ATA186 as it clearly indicates on the Cisco website that they way they deal with fax is by automatically switching from a compressing codec to g711. It does not support T.38 at all and I need T.38 to get the fax to work with my VoIP provider's changes.

I guess I could look at other ATAs in the Linksys product line, but I haven't been totally happy with any of the Sipura/Linksys products I've had. Echo has been a problem since day one though I admit not as big an issue on the PAP2Ts as it was on the old SPA3000. Even the SPA841 had/has sound quality issues especially if you try placing it close to a laptop computer.

So I am down now to the Grandstream HT502 or ???? for ATAs.

I would rather stick with a stock Astlinux build but am now wondering if some sort T.38 origination/termination add-on for Asterisk might also be possible. Reading through the Asterisk T.38 posts gets me very confused... My impression from reading the Asterisk literature is that the Asterisk T.38 origination/termination support or add-ons are for handling image files, probably emailed to/from the final recipient rather than doing an inband conversion of a call on a SIP channel.

Is it possible to (add-on for 1.4 or perhaps built in with 1.6) to have the fax call via g711 to/from my PAP2T converted by Asterisk into a T.38 call to/from my VoIP provider? Would my Net5501 be powerful enough to do it?

Thanks!

Hi,

You can always try AudioCodes media gateways.
They provide T.38 Passthrough among other things.
My company uses them for Fax Passthru, as well as for Dect Phones and PSTN connections.
Different mixes are available.
