I've used a few HP thin clients in a variety of application, and
generally with great results. The one issue that I discovered was a
BIOS limit of 512 MB of memory in the 57xx series.
I actually prefer the thin clients to Soekris or ALIX boards with
slower processors. The faster processor can be helpful, especially when
considering pfsense vs monowall for a firewall.
HP's SMB refurb center has some nice deals on thin clients, fairly
constantly. For example:
HP t5730 No-OS AS 2100+ 1.0GHz 0F/2GR Rmkt TC @ $139
So that's got 2 GB memory, no flash DOM...but the price is pretty good.
They publish a new list of inventory daily. I buy laptops from them
quite frequently.
I think that Ward Mundy has a nice idea with using net-tops like the
Acer Aspire Revo. You can often find Atom based systems offered for
under $200.

The better Soekris and ALIX boards are ultimately better solutions for
having no moving parts and a more industrial build quality.

In my seemingly never ending quest for business-worthy hardware to run
astlinux on.. im wondering if anyone has ever run it on an HP T 5545
Thin client& ive heard of it on the T 5710& but I believe thats EOL
now&
I Love the soekris hardware.. but it seems potential customers out
there just are not too hip on what is a smaller hobbyist as they call
it product.. never mind the fact soekris has been around for a while
now&.
They like to see big names& I dont want to run a full blown PC for a
system that will max out at 20 simultaneous calls.. all SIP no
compression, no transcoding (same codec all the way through(ulaw))&
So im open to suggestions& I like some of the ALIX products.. however
im a bit concerned about the 256 MB of RAM.. I really like to have 512
MB of RAM since im running some PHP apps (PHP loves RAM)&.
Personally the net5501 fits the bill perfectly & but they want to see
big names I guess&
Suggestions on hardware you use for this type of system? (big and
small names)
Im running a custom image that has been greatly slimmed down..
(asterisk only loads 29 modules).. no firewall, no routing, SIP to
adtran gateways for PSTN access& etc&.. I do use some PHP with the
aastra phones&.and some AGI scripts&
