The intercom parameter for the Dial application is different then the 
Page application. The former simply adds a sip header to tell certain 
phones to auto-answer on the speaker phone, and from Asterisk's 
perspective is no more intensive then a normal call. The Page 
application uses the MeetMe conference system to multiplex all the legs 
together and is probably the most CPU intensive thing you can do.

Also, regardless of what codec you choose, there will be transcoding on 
these Pages. Even if everyone uses ulaw, the legs still need to be 
transcoded into slin, mux'd, transcoded back to ulaw, and sent out. 
Granted using a less CPU intensive codec (like ulaw) will have better 
results, in the end, there are severe limitations and complications. 
Even if you can get more then 5-10 extensions working in a group 
successfully, it is still most likely going to cause problems behind the 
scenes on the box with lockups, etc.
