One test, on your working 0.7 HP Thin client install, do a "lspci -vvv" and see if you have something like: -- 00:0e.0 IDE interface: ALi Corporation M5229 IDE (rev c5) (prog-if fa) -- that is the issue.
Adding kernel support CONFIG_PATA_ALI=y in 1.0.1 fixed the problem. If you have some other controller for the IDE interface, let us know to make sure it is in the kernel.
