I would start here: http://www.digium.com/en/products/software/faxforasterisk.php#overview AstLinux 1.0.x is now glibc compatible, so you could directly use the Digium binaries. When I remember right, did Lonnie try the G.729 codec on a net5501 a while ago. So Fax should also work.
