I successfully installed the free Fax for Asterisk from Digium today on my
Alix 2c3. Digium's instructions worked well but there were two hiccups...

1) There is a benchfax application that is supposed to determine the best
flavor of binary file to download. It tested for "generic" "i686' then
skipped a few as not compatible, then got segfault message. Of the two
tests that ran i686 was marginally faster, so that is the version I
downloaded.

2) On untar'ing the module I got message that I was out of space on the
device. I was in /root which I think is ramdisk. I erased the benchfax
application and that freed up enough space.

After installing res_fax_digium.so into the modules directory I removed
(renamed) res_fax_spandsp.so so that both would not load. I'm not sure what
would happen if both modules were loaded -- which one would Asterisk use on
receiving a fax?

I restarted Asterisk, checked that the digium fax module was loaded and I
had license for one channel. Then I sent myself a fax and it worked
(Asterisk received it) using exactly the same dialplan that I had been
using with spandsp.

On the assumption that Digium's Fax for Asterisk is somehow superior to
spandsp I'll stick with this configuration. Does anyone know the
differences (appart from module file size... digium's is way way way
larger).

David.
