one instanceof hacking that couldve happened on any of the solutions you
mentioned.. they are all running the same style of OS// openwrt, astlinux,
Mikrotik are all Linux kernels with iptables... the hacker couldve got any of
them.. somethng was left open on the mikrotik that allowed an exploit..
something work bringing up to the mikrotik folks.. they have always been
responsive to me.. I have used their products for years..
I had one running for over 8 years solidly with never getting compromised..
the CF card in it finally gave up the ghost.. (on a NET4801)..

Pretty good reviews for the Ubiquity stuff. Not a real big saving over an ALIX
system but still worth investigating. Thanks for all the comments everyone. Yes
I know, you don’t need to tell me. You get what you pay for and the amount of
stuffing around is not worth it.
PS Is the Ubiquity wireless good?

Michael, We’ve used several of the Ubiqui Networks EdgeRouter Lite’s at remote
sites that don’t require running Asterisk. They use Vyatta with a web interface
wrapped over the top, but the shell is available. Those run about $100 and will
give you VPN, firewall and a bunch of other features (but not wireless).

Subject: [Astlinux-users] The wireless router dilemma Ok I know this has
been sort of discussed before but I have a bit of a dilemma. I have one cost
conscious organisation (a not for profit) with a couple of single user sites
that have a single phone and wireless. I connect these sites back to the head
office over the Internet to create a closed telephony system. I initially
used Mikrotik routers which are very feature rich, very cheap and do everything
plus more however when my office router began to perform a DoS attack on the US
Dept of Labor (I kid you not), I thought I would not continue using them.
Now obviously happy to spend the money at the head office on a good Astlinux
system, however its a little hard to justify an x86 box and a separate WAP at
the small site when you can buy one for under $100. Now admittedly it doesn’t
do what I want it to do e.g. SSH Tunnelling so that is where my dilemma is.
The options I see are as follows: 1) Buy a cheap wireless router and put up
with the limitations 2) Buy a cheap wireless router and roll OpenWRT onto it to
give me more features 3) Run Astlinux and a separate WAP and thats that 4) Some
other solution or product I have not looked at Thanks Regards Michael Knill
