I use Astlinux on a cheap thin client, and for wireless I use a linksys WRT54GL with dd-WRT for wireless access.
The idea to keep them separate is to reduce single point of failure, and in the unlikely event Astlinux box dies, gets blown out by lightning, I have an immediate backup. The other reason for this setup is retail off the self wireless routers/access points are only meant for a few users. In the instance I use it for wireless access only, several wireless devices can use the AP with minimal strain on the wireless AP CPU. When you add other functions; VPN, routing, firewall; it tends to consume CPU cycles quickly. ~Benjamin On Mon, 2014-10-06 at 05:15 +0000, Michael Knill wrote: > Ok I know this has been sort of discussed before but I have a bit of a > dilemma. > > > I have one cost conscious organisation (a not for profit) with a > couple of single user sites that have a single phone and wireless. > I connect these sites back to the head office over the Internet to > create a closed telephony system. > > > I initially used Mikrotik routers which are very feature rich, very > cheap and do everything plus more however when my office router began > to perform a DoS attack on the US Dept of Labor (I kid you not), I > thought I would not continue using them. > > > Now obviously happy to spend the money at the head office on a good > Astlinux system, however its a little hard to justify an x86 box and a > separate WAP at the small site when you can buy one for under $100. > Now admittedly it doesn’t do what I want it to do e.g. SSH Tunnelling > so that is where my dilemma is. > > > The options I see are as follows: > 1) Buy a cheap wireless router and put up with the limitations > 2) Buy a cheap wireless router and roll OpenWRT onto it to give me > more features > 3) Run Astlinux and a separate WAP and thats that > 4) Some other solution or product I have not looked at > > > Thanks > Regards > Michael Knill > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Slashdot TV.
