The above "fix" (darkstat 3.0.719) is now in our SVN and will be in the next 
release.  Though it doesn't really solve the problem.  Monitoring the LAN 
interface may be the best alternative with a PPPoE connection.  The new 
darkstat version has an improved listing for ports, both local and remote.

It may be possible to automatically restart darkstat when it exits while 
monitoring ppp0, but resetting all the stats makes that not as useful.

BTW, Michael Knill, the darkstat author Emil Mikulic lives in Sydney... a 
"mate" of yours :-)
