Works perfectly!" Answering your question, building your own custom AstLinux image is the only way to do this. I would use a CentOS 7 - 64-bit "Minimal Install" in a VM (VirtualBox, VMware Fusion), use a bridged interface so you can SSH into the VM from your favorite terminal, and follow the Development Environment steps outlined. It is not as difficult as you might think, mostly carefully following instructions. Or possibly find a kind volunteer in your group that already has such skills.
